-  July 27 – William N. Monroe incorporated the San Gabriel Valley Rapid Transit Railway, an ambitious effort to connect Monrovia directly with Los Angeles.

1888: The Monrovia Messenger
-  The Monrovia Messenger debuted, providing residents with local news, building permits, obituaries, and community happenings.
