Featured MAFA Artist: Eric Watkins
Eric is no stranger to the arts. In his younger years, he’s been an actor, singer, dancer and mime in the performing arts for many years. He was a graphic artist for 20 years, which later led him to what he is now: an illustrator in the fine arts world.
Other than his work using colored pencil with pen and ink, pen and ink silhouettes, Eric has recently painted several utility boxes since 2018: “The Kid”, “The Founding Fathers of Monrovia”, “Native American”, “Get Your Kicks on Route 66” and “Take a Trip on Route 66” for the City of Monrovia. He has also won an award for the “Best of the Show” in the first Juried Art Show of 2018, and was featured in the Winter 2020 and Spring 2023 editions of “Arts of Poetry.” Many of his works are on display in various restaurants, galleries and art walks throughout the surrounding communities.
"I first take multiple pictures of the houses or buildings I'm interested in drawing and choose the most interesting angles. Then I convert them into black and white. Next I draw them in graphite pencil so, if I need to correct something I just erase and redraw. After that I ink them with India ink (Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pen). I call them pen and ink silhouettes. It basically shows the lights and shadows." ~ Eric Watkins
Eric Watkins has been a member of MAFA (Monrovia Association of Fine Arts) in Monrovia since the summer of 2016. In January 2019, he became a Board Member of MAFA and was elected as Vice-President in January 2023. Eric is the Gallery Manager for Artist Alley and various galleries around Monrovia. He has also been a member of PVAA (Pomona Valley Art Association).
